Procrastinators, take note: Walmart is making a play for last-minute shoppers in the last weeks before Christmas.
Walmart will be doubling the selection of merchandise that qualifies as “Free Pickup Today,” driving more customers to order online and then pick up their orders in-store.
This service gives procrastinators an extra reason to wait until the last minute. Buying online and picking up in-store allows them to bypass the shipping wait (and also the lines in store). This also allows shoppers to know if their item is in stock before trekking to the local store.
Walmart is tapping into the fact 90 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store.
Shoppers using the service can shop at Walmart.com up until December 23, and orders can be picked up as late as 6 pm Christmas Eve.
According to a stat from CNBC, Walmart has tripled the number of items on Walmart.com to over 70 million items today, and some of that growth stems from unique relationships with well-known brands.
Also news for the holidays: Walmart will be stuffing unloaded gift cards into some online orders this year. This lets customers with last-minute gifts load up the cards up as gifts themselves.
